Week 7 Journal Entry

Part 1: Video Reflection

Me and my teammate collaborated during zoom primarily as we are able to share screens and talk. We used Microsoft Powerpoint and Adobe Photoshop and Stock to create our slides. The process is pretty smooth as we have a small group and can communicate easily and divide up work. I think if we had a larger group it could be hard for everyone to agree on what should be displayed on the slides which can be solved by collaborating with the team and coming to a compromise where everyone is happy and okay with the outcome.

Part 2: Ted Talks and Lectures

I chose “Confessions of a Recovering People Pleaser” as the TED talk that interested me because I feel like I please people instead of myself first, and wanted to hear what he has to say as it could help in group projects where I want to please my group members. I think there needs to be a balance of sacrificing yourself and saying what you truly want. If you continue to just go with the flow and be okay with everything, people will think you have no spine like Baron Ryan says. I don't agree with him when he says people pleasers please people because they do not like themselves. In a very not self-centered way, I love myself, I just want other people to be happy as well.

In the other TED talk related to Computer Science, “The danger of AI is weirder than you think” describes how the AI we have today is not like the movies where AI takes over and starts thinking on its own. The AI today is only capable of doing what we ask it to, which is the danger Janelle Shane refers to. She goes on to explain that we have to be able to explain to the AI the proper context and rules to solve a problem. I thought this was interesting as we just finished learning about prompt engineering. It is important we ask AI proper questions to get the job done the correct way.

We also watched videos and learned about proper presentations and how to make them effective, and what makes them not effective. I have made powerpoint presentations for quite some time now so I feel like I have a good understanding of what is and isn't acceptable. Main points are to keep words minimal and focus on explaining using your own words and not directly from the slide. Also keep away from non stop animations as it is confusing for some, choose proper fonts and text size, and overall keep it simple and let your own voice do the work.
